Radiative sensitivities of tropical anvils to small ice crystals

چکیده
Stratiform anvils in the upper tropical troposphere were simulated to determine the sensitivities of their radiative properties to the presence of small ice crystals. Cloud evolution was modelled in a one-dimensional (vertical) framework incorporating an updraft, deposition, sublimation, sedimentation, nucleation, and radiation. The sensitivities of cloud radiative forcing, albedo, emissivity, and heating rate were derived from a test that included then excluded the presence of numerous small crystals. These crystals sizes (3 < L < 20 μm) have been measured in recent observations but are smaller than the detection limit of most past observations. The shortwave forcing and albedo were very sensitive to the presence of the small crystals, even though these crystals accounted for less than 2% of total cloud mass. For optically thick anvils the longwave forcing and emissivity were in general much less sensitive to the small ice crystals than their shortwave counterparts. Radiative treatments assuming a hexagonal crystal habit yielded the same sensitivities as the spherical habit. The results agreed with previous studies in that the increased backscatter from hexagonal crystals enhanced the planetary albedo by ∼ 10–15%. The heating rate sensitivity to the small crystals depended on vertical location within the cloud and showed cancellation between the longwave and shortwave heating perturbations. The small crystals changed heating rates by up to 50% at cloud top and base.

متن کاملOn the importance of small ice crystals in tropical anvil cirrus
In situ measurements of ice crystal concentrations and sizes made with aircraft instrumentation over the past two decades have often indicated the presence of numerous relatively small (< 50μm diameter) crystals in cirrus clouds. Further, these measurements frequently indicate that small crystals account for a large fraction of the extinction in cirrus clouds. The fact that the instruments used...
متن کاملEffect of crystal size spectrum and crystal shape on stratiform cirrus radiative forcing
Sensitivities of cirrus cloud radiative forcing as well as solar albedo and infrared emittances to ice crystal size spectrum and ice crystal shape were examined using a coupled cloud-radiation model. The singleand bi-modal crystal size distribution were considered and simulated based on field measurements. Optical parameters of ice crystals shaped as hexagonal columns and random Ž . polycrystal...
متن کاملUtilization of Equivalent Spheres of Equal Volume and Surface Area for Estimation of the Asymmetry Parameter from Microphysical Observations
Understanding the scattering properties of complex ice particles is essential to understanding the role of clouds in climate. Ray-tracing studies (Fu, 1998; Takano and Liou, 1989a; Takano and Liou, 1995) have focused on simple ice crystal shapes such as columns and plates. The scattering properties of highly complex ice crystals would be computationally prohibitive to calculate using traditiona...

The spectral infrared emission (500-2000 cm) of laboratory ice clouds has been measured with a fourier transform infrared spectrometer. A cloudscope (a novel microscope equipped with a video camera) captured cloud ice crystals for microphysical characterization of the cloud. Theoretical emission calculations based on modified Mie theory, observed crystal size distributions, and an approximation...
